Northern soul, known for its heavy beats and fast tempos, was a musical movement made popular in the Northern cities of the United Kingdom during the 1960's and 70's.
Gaining a loyal following by the young working class looking for a musical refuge far from the disco and pop music that were topping the charts and gaining massive popularity in the south, Northern Soul halls began popping up in smaller townships and eventually larger cities such as Manchester.
They were sanctuaries where people from all over northern Britain could meet up and dance the weekends away before having to heading back to the working life after the weekend was done.
